Testosterone is a naturally occurring hormone in men and serves many purposes, including regulating sex drive, red blood cell production and maintaining muscle strength and bone density. As most men age, their testosterone levels drop naturally; however, certain medical conditions can speed up or exacerbate the loss of testosterone.
Medically rooted testosterone drops often do require pharmaceutical intervention, which was the original purpose for the development and approval of Low Testosterone (Low-T) drugs. However, as of 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Medical Association (AMA) have linked the abuse and ‘off-label’ use of testosterone replacement therapies to several life-threatening side-effects, including:
- Heart attack
- High blood pressure
- Blood clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism)
- Blood clot in the deep veins (deep vein thrombosis)
- Complications in patients with heart, kidney or liver disease
Due to the aggressive and often misleading marketing of these Low-T treatment options, it’s not surprising that legal action is being taken at an increasing rate in several states across the country.
