Douglas & London was proud to sponsor the international premiere of the award-winning documentary, How To Poison A Planet. Featuring actor and activist Mark Ruffalo and the Douglas & London team, the documentary reveals for the first time the jaw-dropping story of how a single company contaminated an entire planet with the cancer-causing chemicals known as PFAS. Featuring founding partner Gary Douglas [link to bio on site], senior trial associate and environmental lawyer Rebecca Newman [link to bio on site], and the entire trial team at Douglas & London, the documentary chronicles the years-long effort to hold those responsible to account and to eventually have them pay billions of dollars for a massive cleanup of our nation’s drinking water. The settlement, negotiated by finding partner Michael London [link to bio on site], is the largest water contamination settlement in American jurisprudence history. We were honored to have award-winning director Katrina McGowan and Mark Ruffalo document and help tell this story in this compelling must-see documentary film.
Douglas & London’s Role Spearheading A Historic Legal Effort
How to Poison a Planet follows the efforts of the Douglas & London team to bring 3M and other corporate manufacturers of PFAS to account. Gary Douglas was selected as lead trial counsel to try the first case in the AFFF Multi-District Litigation (“MDL”) before Judge Richard Gergel in the District of South Carolina. Michael London, also founding partner of Douglas & London, was Court-appointed to act as co-lead counsel representing all plaintiffs. Additionally, senior trial associate Rebecca Newman has been instrumental in securing PFAS-related victories against corporate wrongdoers; read more about her contributions here.
Douglas & London has played an especially crucial role in the prosecution of this complex MDL. Due to our firm’s experience and success in the C8 litigation, which also involved PFAS chemicals, our team has been intimately involved in every aspect of this case from its inception.
How to Poison a Planet tells the thrilling tale of the Douglas & London team’s preparation for the first trial on behalf of municipal water providers whose drinking water supplies have been contaminated with PFAS. The pressure exerted on defendants was ultimately responsible for the historic settlements with 3M and DuPont totaling nearly $14 billion, reached on the literal eve of trial.
