Risperdal

Risperdal (or risperidone) is a medication often prescribed to treat symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and irritability that can be associated with autism.  Risperdal was marketed and manufactured by a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary company, Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.  as a safe and effective drug for patients with serious psychotic conditions and quickly became as strong seller for the pharmaceutical company.

However, overshadowing Risperdal’s promising future as a helpful antipsychotic has been the drug’s dangerous side effects like Gynecomastia, or the development of breasts in young males.  Although non-cancerous, Gynecomastia can lead to suicide, severe personal embarrassment, longterm psycho-social harm and even the need for surgery.  In addition to Gynecomastia, other serious side effects associated to the use of Risperdal include:

  • Diabetes
  • Bone loss
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Tardive dyskinesia
  • Weight gain
  • Heart attack, irregular heart beat
  • Suicide

Not surprisingly, more than 420 lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson, and the pharmaceutical giant has already paid billions of dollars to settle federal and state allegations claiming they illegally marketed Risperdal.
